Trying to find out some information
Jun 20th, 2010 at 8:26pm

I watched a video on YouTube in which the guy demonstrated using Norton Ghost 14 how he made a system image of his computer just by running the software from the CD drive. So he didn't actually install Ghost on his computer.

But he mentioned a Tools folder on the disc and the people who replied said they found no such folder?

Now with Norton Ghost 15 they have this thing called "cold imaging". My understanding is that it allows you to make images and recover your system without installing Ghost? Am I correct on that?

So has anyone tried to make images and recover their computer using Ghost 14 without installing it?

Or was that video nonsense and you gotta buy Ghost 15 in order to do that?

I would like to try this using Ghost without actually installing it.

Ghost 14 can't do cold imaging. Ghost 15 does cold imaging and you are correct. Ghost 15 doesn't have to be installed.

I've never used it but downloaded the manual and did a low resolution scanning (read but not in detail). As I understand it, if all the drivers you need are on the NG15 CD (or is it DVD?), then you can run Ghost and do cold imaging, booted from the NG15 CD/DVD. If you need specific drivers, you have to install Ghost 15 and create a custom CD/DVD.

The Ghost 15 CD has drivers for most hardware. If you do need drivers they can be loaded from the CD recovery environment. Clever. SATA drivers and network drivers can be loaded.
