Custom ghost boot iso to usb pen drive
Sep 13th, 2012 at 3:54am

I have a custom iso image [Ghost 11.5] [from a ghost boot cd] and would like to tranfer the iso and boot from a usb pen drive, have tried several methods, but the farthest it boots is to a screen that says detectcd cannot find drive, seems that I need to change a path command somewhere but cant figure out where. Thanks

Does the ISO boot when written to a CD? How is the ISO customized?

Which methods? Have you tried creating a custom USB flash drive in Ghost?

Yes it boots from the cd, tried several methods but the grub bootloader got it the farthest. It is custom because it loads sata drivers and runs ghost 11 and ghost 2003

Did you make the CD in Ghost 11.5? It's odd that Grub4DOS won't work with the ISO.

Have you tried making a custom USB flash drive in Ghost 11.5?

I finally got the iso to boot by using the HP format tool then opening the iso and copying the files to my usb drive, but now I have another question..I noticed that after I start Ghost [from the usb drive or boot-cd] and try to create an image, it does not see my internal  SATA DVD burner, I would like to directly burn the backup. is there a limitation with Ghost or is there something else I am missing.. Thanks

When you created the ISO in Ghost 11.5 were you able to add CD/DVD drivers?

Yes I added the drivers, it works fine if you are booting from a system that has IDE drives, but when I boot from my system that has all SATA, it does not see the internal DVD drive, it sees my harddrive and clones it fine to my external usb harddrive, but I would like the option for the direct burn of the image to the DVD rive.

Did you create a DOS ISO or a Windows PE ISO? Or both?

I played with this last year and I thought the Windows PE version was better than the DOS version. It's more likely to work with your SATA optical drive.

I can't find the thread at the moment but there is a long thread about creating auto Windows PE USB flash drives.

I built a WINPE version...will guard it with my life, worked like a charm..whole different story why I didn't do the PE disc first, but I figured it out, still would like to know if anybody sees their sata dvd drive with the DOS ghost.exe.

Thanks again, you helped alot...

I found that thread. It is interesting but doesn't really apply to your situation. Ghost from Win PE was four times faster than DOS on my old test computer.

By the way, why do you want an image on optical media? It's the most unreliable backup medium around.

Even though my main backups are kept on a dedicated external hdd, I like to have a least one hard copy of a backup, and yes this PE version is way faster than DOS ...

Thanks again..will keep my eyes ""on the board"" for more helpfull info...

Understood. I thought optical media were your first choice.

Just had it in my mind that I was going to figure out the problem, but with my obviously limited DOS skills, I knew I had hit a brick wall, and when the PE version worked, it put me at ease.
