I was able to log in, but obviously it said it could not find my profile.  I'm at the desktop.

Excellent. Connect your old HD (USB) and just copy and paste the files and folders from your old D: drive to your new data drive. Leave the .v2i image there too. Then reboot. It doesn't have to be done by imaging. Let us know your progress.

Won't plugging it into usb mess up the mbr causing it to be unbootable?

No. After you have booted once to the 80 GB HD there are no problems with connecting your old HD as a slave or as a USB HD. Its drive letters will be different but that doesn't matter.

If you want to boot to that HD at a later time, no problem either.
