Hi, I am using external hard drive connect directly to onboard usb port. I been follow every single step on the first page, but it still gave me an error of " can't find the USB controller, no letter drive was added" I wasn't able to see my external drive. I am using PC-dos bootable disk. If I have to use MS-DOS, can any help tell me how to make it with ghost  2003 software?

Thanks

Three questions: (1) What make and model of external HDD are you working with ?; (2) do you have a 3.5-inch floppy drive on your PC ?; and (3) do you have access to a PC running WIN 98SE or WIN Me ?

Doesn't look like this thread has gotten any posts in a few months but if anyone is interested, I was able to use a similar process with Ghost 2003 from the Windows interface to access a PCMCIA USB2.0 card and an Iomega Hard Drive.

I enabled USB 2.0 in Ghost 2003, selected user files and added himem.sys, USBASPI.SYS  and  DI1000DD.SYS

I then added all lines from the [COMMON] section of the original instructions to the Config.sys additions.  I don't believe the stacks command worked properly and the Ghost 2.0 drivers did not detect a device (I might have been able to remove them altogether but it worked so I didn't waste anymore time with it).

This seemed to do the trick.  Ghost was able to access the drive and at USB 2.0 speeds (I typically see about a 4X improvement over USB 1.0 / 1.1).

Hope this helps.

This procedure is just what I need the trouble is I am new to this sort of thing and need someone to hold my hand. I have created the 2 boot discs and can copied the extra files but where do I find the config.sys file? I have 5 files on the first disc:Ghost,USB,IO,Mouse,MSDOS.One file on the second disc:GHOST.
I have a dell inspiron3800 running XP pro, I have 98SE on another computer and both have floppy drives.
Please could someone spare the time to walk me through this procedure.

What a great board!  Okay, here is my delima... I know you guys can handle this.

I have a IBM Thinkpad X30 with a Hitachi 40GB Hard Drive.  Two partitions exist, the 38gb Windows Partition and a FAT32 LBA partition that has some IBM recovery junk in there.  I just bought the Seagate Momentus 5400.2 100GB drive.  How the heck to I ghost to that drive?  I am on WinXP Pro SP2.

Here is what I've tried so far:

Ghost 2003 on my workstation with both 2.5" drives connected to different IDE channels.. Boot to DOS and clone the drive to the new drive.  The thinkpad wont boot the new drive.  I tried the -IB option to set the Image Boot option.    I tried all the options actually.  Any ideas?

I dont have a floppy drive, only a CD-RW drive on this laptop.  I also only have USB 1.1 .. But I do have a USB2.0 PCMCIA card and a External Hard Drive that I could use.

Thanks in advance!

Could try imaging the old drive to the external.

Create bootable CD

http://nightowl.radified.com/bootcd/bootcdintro.html

http://ghost.radified.com/bootable_cd_dvd.htm

Shutdown

Remove old hard drive

Install new hard drive.

Boot with bootable floppy

Restore image

I'm curious why method you tried didn't work

Did you select disk-to-disk or partition-to-partion?

You need to use disk.

I tried Disk-to-Disk... I've used ghost 100's of times and never had any problems.  It seams there is something different about the way my workstation sees the drive and the Thinkpad laptops.  I found others with the same problem.  I am trying Dantz Retrospect right now.  I did a full backup, put the new HD in (replaced the old one), installed winxp pro, installed sp2, ... and now I am in the process of restoring the data ... 7gb left to restore.  Wish me luck!

Hello,
I have been reading through the threads quite a few times on this very

informative siteand due to its content succesfully managed to use my

external hard drive in dos with Norton 2003!
Thanks
This is great but my laptop is a sony vaio with only 1.1 usb ports.
I have a 2.5 " HD which sits inside an enclosure and a PCMIA USB 2 and

Fire wire adapter host.
I Have followed precisely the  metodology provide by some patient and

informative posters here but to no avail.
My final result is that the host is detected but I cant get further than

the "scanning for USB devices "caption.
My settings are as follows

I have the latest panasonic driver and Himem etc.

The USB cable that connects the enclosure to a USB port has two

connectors on it so it can draw more power from the PC and I was

wondering if this is what wont allow the device to be seen.
It can be seen in DOS but only through my standard built in ports and

runs at 65 MB a minute.
Any help with this problem from someone would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time and what a great info site!

My methodology for working on hidden files such as autoexec.bat and config.sys when contained on 3.5-inch floppies is to perform a Search/Find for '*.*'  restricted to Drive A: alone, which in turn reveals all the files therein.  While Autoexec.bat can be readily accessed with Edit inside the Search Window, config.sys is best opened with Notepad.

First off--your hardware has to support what you are asking about--does the Acer Aspire laptop support booting from an external device through the Firewire port?

The laptop's documentation should answer that question--and the BIOS should also have that option as a boot sequence choice if it does.

No question is stupid...but, possibly the answers are  Wink !
