I found a resolution for my issue(s):

In plugging in different USB devices (camera/flash drive)...somehow my drive letters got changed out.  My original backup schedule was to go to the "F" drive......however, I am assuming that my external HDD was not on when I plugged another USB device in...this made that device my "F" drive....then i turned my external drive back on and XP made it my "G" drive....thus making the backup scheduler point to a "non-existent" device that didn't match the drive letter.  Anyhow, that is my story and I 'm sticking to it.
