On the desktop I created a new user account with the same username and password as the laptop.

So now when you start your laptop, you have to select the username account and enter a password to continue starting up to the desktop, correct?  Also when you start your desktop, you are selecting the same username account and you also have to enter the same password, correct?  If so, then you know you have two matching authorized accounts.

I read in the manual a section on deploying the Ghost 12 to a remote.  Have you succeeded in doing that yet, or that's where you are now?

Check to see if your laptop or desktop firewall is interfering.  I would temporarily disable them while testing.

It backed up the image on the Toshiba laptop c drive.  However, since I don't have a dvdrw drive on it only thing I can think of is to burn it on desktop.  I can copy of transfer the file to the desktop.

However, won't I need a startup disk for the laptop? Or the burned image is good enough? Unsure if I need the recovery disk but probably do.

One more thing.  Is Ghost 12 going to allow me to burn this file to a dvdrw as it's size is almost 9 gigs and I don't have one of those dvdr9's or something like that so it would have to split it up into 2 or maybe 3 dvdr's.

It's two files here.

ANDY-85AA7D5B62.sv2i 3kb
ANDY-85AA7D5B62_C_Drive.v2i 8.972,800kb

I wanted it to be able to restore the system on the laptop using the disks instead of installing Ghost 12 on the laptop.

aplados,

How did you finally manage to image the C: drive of your laptop? We are interested.

Does your laptop have a DVD drive (reader only)?

There are several ways that you could restore your image, split or not split.

I imaged the C: drive on the laptop using your instructions in one of your posts.  It wouldn't let me get in the other way which is to add a computer.

Use Tasks, One time backup
next
and so on.  through the mapped drive

No, laptop has dvd reader only.  Desktop has dvdrw.  Image was made to the c: drive on the laptop and verified and I copied it to my desktop too.

Now, don't know what to do.  But let me clarify.  I want to create an image on a dvdrw if possible.  I don't want to restore it with that big file sitting on the Toshiba.  Want a recoverable dvd written on disk to restore.  So I could just boot it up with the disk and it would image the burned image from the dvdr to the laptop.  Does that make sense?

Interesting. I couldn't Add a computer either.

OK. To split your recovery point. Double click the .v2i file. The Symantec Recovery Point Browser opens. Select the .v2i file in the top left pane, click Copy at the top. Choose a destination, High compression, tick in Divide into smaller files and choose 2048 MB from the Drop down menu. OK. Now you will be able to burn two of these 2048 MB files to each DVD with Nero etc. If you want to restore the laptop, copy all of the DVDs to a folder on the desktop, boot the laptop from the Ghost 12 CD and restore across the network.

Otherwise, to restore the laptop you could boot the laptop from the Ghost 12 CD and then remove the Ghost 12 CD and insert the DVDs when requested. I would prefer the first method.

You should use R DVDs and not RW DVDs. The latter are unreliable.

Make sense?

I thought I'd tell you that I will try tomorrow ok?  In case you are waiting for a reply here.  I will be selling the laptop and no ghost 12 with it.  So that's why i wanted it burned to dvd.

Could I just install it on the Toshiba laptop temporarily so I can create a recovery disk, then uninstall it?

That way I could just insert the recovery disk upon bootup, then it probably will ask me to put the burned dvd's in for restoring.

And no, I won't be using rewriteable dvd's.

I think that's OK with the trial version. 30 days use.

Hold everything before you go ahead and mess with that.  When I opened the image file I saw Toshiba there so I didn't investigate any further.  But what I think I did was image my desktop drive to the Toshiba.  So give me some more time to check up on this as I won't have time until tomorrow afternoon sometime.

Might have to install the program on the Toshiba laptop and backup to the desktop.  hehehe

I wondered whether you had done that but I didn't want to ask.

I had to install ghost 12 on the laptop.  I made the files to the laptop hard drive and copied and then copied them to the desktop.  Defeated my purpose which was to not install ghost 12 on the laptop.  Either this new software has alot of bugs still or I don't know what I am doing.

Before it ran this time it gave a error message that the drive on my computer was not available and could not connect to it.  But then it said "do you wish to write it anyways" which I said yes and then it ran for a minuet or so and stopped.  So i wrote it to the laptop hard drive.  What's up with this Ghost 12?

aplados,

If you want to image your laptop without installing any software, use Drive SnapShot. Put snapshot.exe on a CD or USB flash drive and run it. Write the image to a Mapped drive on the desktop computer.

It's not a good idea to use an image that has been written to the C: drive.

OK, I'm going to give Snapshot a try again.  How was it that I burn the backed up file with nero? Or was it I need to download the BartPE?    Very confused.

As far as the Norton 12, problem with usernames and passwords and can't deploy the agent.
Fine for backing up the computer its installed on.  I guess I need to do lots of study before I can figure everything out on it.

aplados,

You only need to have SnapShot on the BartPE CD if you want to restore the image. To create an image you just need snapshot.exe on a CD or USB memory stick.

In the Advanced section of SnapShot, select 2048 MB splits and write the image to your Mapped Network drive. Later, use Nero in UDF/ISO mode and you will be able to put two files on each DVD.
