SUCCESS USING GHOST WITH NOTEBOOK & PCMCIA CARD
Feb 5th, 2004 at 11:25am

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook with a USB 2.0 PCMIA card attached to an external Iomega HDD drive, becuase my onboard usb 1.1 ports are excrucatingly slow. Until reently, I was unable to use Norton Ghost to image my notebook's hard drive after it restarted in DOS. I have now been able to do it successfully with the instructions that floow below, when using Ghost from 2 floppy disks. I wish to thank kurtlinux from the Experts Exchange for persevering with me and helping to solve this thorny issue. I hope this works as successfully for you in your particular system.
---Nick Baldo

      GETTING GHOST TO WORK THROUGH A LAPTOP USB 2.0 PCMIA CARD TO AN EXTERNAL DRIVE

1. MAKE GHOST FLOPPIES FROM NORTON GHOST UTILITIES
     -USB support, Advanced button, all drivers
     -Let it quick format the floppies or you will interrupt it's progress

2. DOWNLOAD HIMEM.SYS FROM INTERNET
     -If you are using XP, you cannot use it's himem.sys file, so go to www.bootdisk.com
     -Download the Windows 98SE botdisk, extract it to a formatted floppy
     -Copy himem.sys to your Ghost floppy

3. DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT USBASPI.SYS AND DI1000DD.SYS FROM THE INTERNET
     -Go To www.cisnet.com/glennmcc/download/usb-dos.htm and scroll to bottom of page
     -Download both kxlrw40an.exe and mhairudos.zip
     -Extract  kxlrw40an.exe first, then copy its USBASPI.SYS (1/26/02) to the floppy
     -Extract mhairudos.zip, then copy DI1000DD.SYS to the floppy
     -Do not copy the USBASPI.SYS from mhairudos.zip since it is older

4. EDIT CONFIG.SYS ON THE FLOPPY
     -Replace the existing config.sys lines with th following:

[menu]
menuitem=FROMFLPY, This computer was started from a Ghost boot disk
menuitem=FROMCD, This computer was started from a Ghost bootable CD

[FROMFLPY]

[FROMCD]

[COMMON]
LASTDRIVE=Z
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
FILES=40
BUFFERS=20
STACKS=9,256
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=USBASPI.SYS /v /w /e
DEVICEHIGH=DI1000DD.SYS

5. NOW REBOOT AND CROSS YOUR FINGERS
     -Enjoy:)

Some other enchancements:

If you also want to use an external USB (1.1 or 2) CD/RW for your images all you need to do is add "device=USBCD.SYS /d:USBCD001" to your config.sys file and in the autoexe.bat file add "mscdex /d:USBCD001"

Forgot to add :

USBCD.SYS is included with USBASPI.SYS in kxlrw40an.exe (step 3 of your original post)

I have been desperately trying to Ghost image to Anypak (USB2 20 GB external hard drive) & found this link from Radified Forums. But the site ww.cisnet.com/glennmcc/download/usb-dos.htm to download the correct files shows not found. Can any one help me with the missing files. I might also need some overall help as I am not sure which of the 2 floppies to copy the files to. Is it OK if I use PC-DOS? It works OK when burning to CDs but far too many & far too slow.

Thank you

Colin,

Try this...

http://www.cisnet.com/glennmcc/download/usb-dos.php

At the bottom of the page there are two links for both the files to click on to start the downloads.

Good Luck Cheesy

Radmin edit: these files were using too much of Glenn's bandwidth, so he sent them and I popsted them here:

Thank you for the new links. I have finally managed to get Ghost 2003 to write to the Anypak (internally a Fujitsu) USB 2 external hard drive through the PCMCIA card. This has been driving me nuts since Feb last year (2003) when I bought an expensive Dell laptop ($4,500) that seemed to have lots of everything but also had a well-kept secret ......... the on-board USB ports were only USB 1.1.

When I found that Ghost 2003 would not recognise the PCMCIA card I contacted Symantec but was just told Sorry, Tough Luck, Not Supported. Now that I have the solution, it is so simple that Symantec need a good swift kick right up the backside for such bad service. I won't say here what I now think of Dell, whose Tech Support is now off-shore in Malaysia and/or India, and whose help was even worse than that from Symantec.

To get it working I had to creat the Ghost Standard Boot Disk with USB support, All Drivers, and with MS-DOS, plus Assign DOS Drive Letters. I couldn't get it to work with PC-DOS. I then added the extra files to the first floppy and modified CONFIG.SYS.

I found it worked only if I booted from the first floppy with the card installed & the Anypak also connected but NOT swirched on until so prompted. I left the other USB devices (printer, scanner) connected, which made no difference.

There is a heart-stopping pause after scanning for USB devices and then suddenly it calls for the second floppy and when finished Ghost 2003 recognises the Anypak through the card. I don't have to tell you how much faster USB 2 is than USB 1.1.

Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated.

Good on, Colin Cheesy

So happy you succeeded! Was glad to help.

See how easy it is once you have everything figured out??

You may want to keep track of which images you have made with your present "build" of Ghost. Apparently folks here have found out that using the upgrade feature to have the latest build can cause problems.  See the thread of the following link.

Thanks for that. I have Ghost 2003 build 793 having been updated from Live Update. Due to previous problems I have "wiped the slate clean" with the laptop, and the desktop is brand new and just imaging now for first time. But I can see that there are problems with mixing builds. Thanks for the warning.

Thanks again

Colin

Thanks again!
